ABSTRACT

The United Auto Workers (UAW) has played an important role in building the middle class through progressive collective bargaining agreements. Thus, both the rank-and-file and the general public were shocked when the news media began reporting evidence of misconduct among high-ranking UAW officials—as well as selected corporate officials affiliated with Fiat Chrysler Auto (FCA) in the summer of 2017. Since then, the US Attorney’s office has obtained convictions of 14 UAW and corporate officials for various crimes, mainly motivated by personal gain. The wrongdoing has clustered into three principal areas and raised questions about the institutional integrity of the UAW and its collective bargaining relationships with the Detroit 3.
