ABSTRACT

This chapter provides background information on the UAW, including data on its membership, organization, and governing structure. Establishing this institutional context gives a better understanding of the nature and scope of wrongdoing. The supreme governing body of the UAW is its quadrennial constitutional convention, which is composed of delegates elected by secret ballot among the rank-and-file. The convention makes decisions regarding governing, administering, and operating the union through resolutions adopted by the delegates. It elects the members of the International Executive Board (IE), which consists of five international executive officers plus regional directors. The IEB determines policy during the interim between conventions, while the International executive officers administer the union.
