ABSTRACT

Beginning in the late 1990s, Stage 3 has been significantly on the ascent since about 2010, when a series of news media around the globe produced and published online original interactive and immersive news content, including some augmented reality (A.R.) and virtual reality (V.R.) news reports. Particularly significant is The New York Times’s 2015 production of The Displaced. It is a V.R. news report enabling users to virtually enter into each of three refugee camps and experience life as a displaced person. Via 1 million Google Cardboard devices distributed free to The Times’s subscribers, readers became immersive news users with their smartphone inserted into the Cardboard device.
