ABSTRACT

This concluding chapter reflects on key themes in the book in light of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic in Cape Town. Arguing the economic impact of the crisis will see a hollowing out of the middle class, the chapter notes some members of the educated middle class experienced a sense of helplessness for the first time. The chapter also analyzes the moral crisis of corruption during the pandemic. Focusing on congregational life during the pandemic, progressive Christian discourse is contrasted with conservative evangelical emphasis on spiritual comfort. It is argued that South African culture is secularizing, as churches endorsed the authority of scientific experts, and focused on providing spiritual comfort.
