ABSTRACT
This chapter provides an understanding of the key concepts surrounding the religion–gender nexus. It explores how gender roles and norms are constructed and what could cause the different treatment of men and women within religious traditions. The aim is to give the reader an accessible and applicable understanding of gender, social constructionism, and feminist theory. The chapter will also contrast manifestations of religious fundamentalism with forms of religious feminism that have sought to respond to gender bias within religious traditions.
