Samuel Hanson complained that he had been unfairly treated by the island’s new governor, who harboured an unexplained grudge against him and abused his power to attack him. Hanson escaped the island to lay his case before the king, but found that doing so did not bring him speedy and definitive justice. Samuel Hanson’s case had yet to be completely decided by the time of the publication of this text, which represented an attempt to shape its outcome. In January 1685, William Blathwayt, Attorney General, still had before him the matter of the bond forfeited by Captain Richard Young of the ship Malaga for transporting Hanson to England.
