ABSTRACT

Lady Jane continued to lobby the Admiralty, the President of the United States, the Tsar of Russia and anyone who would listen, in a ceaseless attempt to prolong the search. Collinson in the Enterprise was not to be rushed. Arriving at the Bering Strait too late in the winter of 1850, he waited until the spring of 1851 to set sail into the frozen Beaufort Sea. He found more favourable ice conditions than had been encountered the previous year by the Investigator and was able to progress at a much faster pace. While McClure and Collinson made their way back to England, the Scot, John Rae, was dog-sledging overland in the area of the Boothia Peninsula. Lady Jane encouraged Charles Dickens to write a patriotic response to Rae in his journal, Household Words.
