ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author focuses on the issue of obstacles to change and the importance of identifying them and responding constructively to them. He discusses the issue of vulnerability factors and how to deal with these to enable the people to sustain and even enhance their gains. The author also discusses the types of obstacles to change the people are likely to encounter. These are personal obstacles, interpersonal obstacles and environmental obstacles. The source of personal obstacles to change is, as the phrase makes clear, within the people as a person. Consequently, the author discusses one's personal response to obstacles, how rational emotive behaviour therapy (REBT) suggests that they approach the issue and the importance of choosing their own ultimate response based on either of these approaches or an integration of the two. REBT’s approach to relapse response encourages the people to accept that sometimes relapse occurs.
