ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author focuses on emotional problems that are based on people's responses to adversity. In single-session therapy (SST), a client is encouraged to state their understanding of their nominated problem and is asked if they would be interested in hearing their therapist’s professional understanding of the same problem. In SST, the therapist and the client work together to come up with a shared understanding of the nominated problem before proceeding to address it. In the author experience, there are eight major emotional problems for which people seek help. The professional constructs that the author bring to this book are informed by an approach to therapy known as rational emotive behavior therapy, a form of cognitive behavior therapy. Behavior that accompanies the people main troublesome emotion tends to be dysfunctional or unconstructive in a number of ways.
