ABSTRACT

Historically, teachers learned their profession through an apprenticeship model, and student teachers worked alongside the ‘master’ until they were deemed capable of being independent teachers themselves. In some countries, this is still the way teacher preparation is carried out. The ideas that run through this book provide a way of planning and mapping their prac experiences—and supporting their thinking, doing and reflecting. Pedagogy is the science of teaching. Understanding pedagogy provides insights into why one teach the way they teach, and how they teach. Elsewhere in their course, they will learn more about these three focal points: images of children, relationships and pedagogies. Experienced teachers use methods and strategies automatically, and often they are unaware that they are using ‘tricks of their trade’ that not everyone knows about.
