ABSTRACT

This chapter presents case studies conducted since that time that have researched and developed this idea in long-term practice. In particular it reports on practice that has taken the idea ‘to scale’—that is, taken the research and development up and out from the small scale to a whole-of-system scale. The chapter is intended both as evidence and a source of ideas about how to assist ‘scaffold’ and build in to organisational, community and professional practices, regular thoughtful practice-based inquiry at different scales. It presents the experiences of a representative range of human services that set out systematically to build in research, evaluation and continuous quality improvement over relatively extended periods of time. Organisations interested in system-wide inquiry need to find effective ways of nurturing the core inquiry group to extend or engage iteratively to involve additional and eventually all relevant stakeholders and stakeowners in collaborative or co-operative inquiry.
