ABSTRACT

This chapter explores exactly why connecting with the external environment and keeping an eye on what lies 'down the track' for education is so important. As the Chinese proverb above implies, the context in which educators must operate is continuously moving, flexing and changing. The chapter discusses the importance of linking more systematically with the wider environment, using networks to identify best practice and new directions, and developing partnerships for improvement. It explores the importance of anticipating the future for education, both in one’s particular sector and more generally, as well as the external influences which must be monitored and some anticipated futures for the field. The chapter emphasises, therefore, that what is necessary for effective change managemerit is striking the right balance between looking inside and outside, concentrating on the present and the future, and being both reactive and proactive.
