ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses problem exploration and developing strategies to addressproblems and goals. Goals can then be discussedand defined following the decision about which problems to work on. The more detailed problem exploration can then follow the setting of the goals. The goals can be revised following the problem exploration if necessary. Problem-related strategies should follow problem identification, prioritising, goals and exploration for the reasonsexplained earlier. Facilitative strategies can be vised to inject some positive feelings into the family work, particularly if the worker senses that discussion about problems is becoming negative and overwhelming for family members. Strategies may also be undertaken between sessions by-workers. Workers should encourage strategies that break down inequitable family structures. The worker saw the parents' views as a reflection of a particular culture and encouraged problem definition, goals and strategies that reflected a more 'Western' approach to this issue.
