ABSTRACT

This chapter defines ethics and the difference between a code of ethics and a code of conduct, connects with a code of ethics that supports ethical leadership and guides ethical decision-making and practice, and applies ethical practice across diverse cultural and social contexts and advocate for the profession. It ensures legal and ethical responsibilities are in place to protect children’s wellbeing and rights, uses a code of ethics in ways that benefit children, families and community members, and demonstrates respect for diverse opinions and develop leadership that sustains ethical organisational cultures. Professional ethics are the moral commitments articulated by a profession and assist professionals to make decisions based on what the wider profession values. An educator’s personal values and morals guide their behaviour; however, if matters of ethics are left to individuals’ values, conflict and dissension may arise when viewpoints differ.
