ABSTRACT

Geometry is the study of location, space and shapes in both two and three dimensions. Polygons are simple closed plane figures with three or more straight sides. Polygons with three sides and three angles are called triangles, while those with four sides are called quadrilaterals. Triangles which have all sides the same length and all angles the same size are called equilateral. Quadrilaterals are classified by their side and angle properties. Parallelograms are the broadest class of quadrilaterals and include rhombuses, rectangles and squares. Perimeter is the distance around the boundary of a two-dimensional shape. The image appears to be the same size and distance from the mirror as the original object and is reversed. Geometry is concerned with locating points in two- and three-dimensional space. Students’ early experiences with location are characterised by rather subjective concepts such as over, under, above, below, between, up, down, left, right, forwards and backwards.
