ABSTRACT

Careful planning ensures that a teacher has a clear idea of what, when, how and why students are going to learn. Planning also allows teachers to anticipate problems before they occur in a lesson. Teachers are responsible for the learning program that occurs in their classroom and as such they are expected to carefully document their planning. Short-term planning occurs at the level of individual lessons or learning activities. Teachers will often use focus questions as a technique for gaining instantaneous feedback on student understandings and/or misunderstandings. Registered teachers have demonstrated their planning ability and are able to provide the necessary documentation on request. An important aspect of lesson planning is to reflect on the phases of the learning experience that worked well and those that require refinement. Flexibility is an essential element of all lesson planning since it is impossible to plan for all possible contingencies.
