ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses issues of safety such as physical and emotional safety, cultural and sexual safety and therapeutic environments and highlights tips on how you can create and contribute to a safe environment. Occupational health and safety is defined here as the promotion of health, safety, protection and the prevention of injury and disease in an environment in which people work. In recent years, a number of policies have been developed that indirectly relate to occupational safety and safety in the health-care setting. Therapeutic environments in mental health care are an important safety intervention. Clinical supervision is in fact an ‘umbrella term’ meaning that a wide variety of models and structures are used to provide clinical supervision. The chapter explores a number of historical and contemporary categories, such as physical and emotional safety, zero tolerance and harm minimisation. It concludes with an overview and a few ideas for professional development, such as clinical supervision, mentorship and preceptorship.
