ABSTRACT

There is clear evidence that workers learn through everyday activities in the workplace. This chapter describes a curriculum model for the workplace and proposes how it would be developed. This curriculum model seeks to make full use of the learning available through everyday participation in work activities guided by expert coworkers and assisted by the contributions of other workers and the workplace environment itself. The model of a workplace curriculum proposed is based on the structuring of activities and guidance in the workplace—on guided learning at work. The curriculum comes into effect as workers engage in the ordinary activities of the workplace. It is explicitly structured to take maximum advantage of opportunities provided freely in the workplace, while also attempting to address some of the limitations of workplace learning experiences in developing expert performance at work.
