ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at training and development programs that can be put in place to help people contribute to the organisation to the best of their ability. Board members are often expected to function at full pace as soon as they join the organisation, but they will only be able to achieve this if orientation and induction have been satisfactorily carried out. It can be frightening for new Board members to be faced with decision-making and planning processes without adequate preparation. The wide literature on staff training and development should not be accepted without careful examination to assess its relevance to the small organisation. Many large and small organisations are now using consultants to undertake a range of tasks, including selection of staff, provision of training and development, facilitating planning, research projects, and designing and evaluating programs. The particular feature of 'mentoring' is that it is a pairing. Another important aspect of mentoring is that it is not 'supervision'.
