ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the information that is necessary simply to do the day-to-day work of the agency. Small organisations sometimes feel that they do not have sufficient influence and control over the way that information they have provided is used. A small not-for-profit organisation might be part of a 'chain' of small agencies funded from a central source and accountable to that funding body, or to a service purchaser that is itself funded for that purpose. It is important to identify whether the purpose of an exercise is for performance appraisal or program appraisal and this refers also to information collection. If information about worker activity is being collected to assess how the program is being carried out in general terms, there are useful and relatively simple ways of keeping track of what workers actually do in their day-to-day practice.
