ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the different types of media writing— media alerts intended to invite journalists to an event; media releases intended to provide a clear summary for the news media; feature articles or profile pieces written for an internal company magazine or annual report; blogs that can provide a very personalised approach and opinion; and fact sheets that present simplified and targeted factual documents. It discusses the importance of online and offline media centres and media distribution— how to get people's finely crafted media messages into the right hands. It is essential to understand when to write a media release or alert. Media writing is a very specific kind of communication, one that requires practice and knowledge. Like every industry, it has its own language and style. A media alert can also be referred to as an advisory. Its purpose is to invite media and influencers to an event.
