ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses not only the range of events that exist and how to plan them, but also ways in which new technology, such as smartphone apps and social media, is disrupting and enhancing traditional media events such as press conferences and product previews. When everybody has a smartphone in their pocket, capable of instantly alerting them to news, delivering photographs, videos and media releases, it may be hard to fathom why a press conference is still a necessity. The best-known media event— the humble press conference— still plays a major role in the news cycle. Many press conferences are now live-streamed by the organiser as well, especially if the message is not just for the media but intended to go out direct to targeted publics. A product launch usually invites influencers and members of the media to come and try the object.
