ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the various national and international numeracy assessment programs in which Australian school students and adults (aged 16–65) participate. It begins with three assessment regimes in which school-aged students participate: NAPLAN, PISA and the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study. These are followed by the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (LANTITE), which Australian pre-service teachers must pass, and finally, PIAAC, which is completed by a cross-sample of the Australian adult population. The implementation of LANTITE was a recommendation of a report by the Teacher Education Ministerial Advisory Group. The chapter examines and critiques how students’ numeracy capabilities are, and can be, assessed in Australian classrooms and how classroom teachers across all discipline areas and at all year levels can gauge their students’ numeracy skill levels. There are fairly traditional means by which the mathematical skills exhibited by students can be assessed.
