ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies the main housing types for older people, including a discussion of issues for older people relating to both public and private housing options, and the possible changes in living arrangements and expectations that will occur as the baby boomer population ages. When considering older people's housing and accommodation arrangements, it is important to reflect on the meaning people attach to these arrangements. The significant reduction in housing availability and introduction of waiting lists of up to ten years have meant that public housing has become less of an option for many older people with few financial resources. There are a number of issues that both private renters and home owners may face which can make them more financially vulnerable. 'Quality' services are those that take a holistic approach to a person's care and that consider a resident's way of living and cultural background as well as any of their physical and medical concerns.
