ABSTRACT

Factors that need to be considered include age, weight, size, physiological and psychological state, and the fact that many organ systems are yet to reach maturity. In most cases, drug dosages are worked out according to a child's weight, but the child's body surface area is considered to give a more precise evaluation. It is not your role as a student to independently determine a medication dosage for a child. However, formulas and exercises are provided to demonstrate to you how a dosage could be established should there be an emergency for you when checking a dose. Many pharmacological textbooks offer formulas to calculate medication dosages but for the purpose of the following exercises, only weight and body surface areas will be used.
