ABSTRACT

This chapter explains aspects of the industry environment that influence project work and the organisational factors that help to determine the chances of project success. It proposes key criteria for choosing and shaping projects that can be adapted and used by leaders and managers to help them make decisions about what projects to do and how to shape them for their own setting. The industry is dynamic and much of it is constantly engaged in change and development. This means that there is always room to find better ways of working, and it can enable staff to muster great energy and commitment. One of the most difficult challenges in project management in the sector is managing the key stakeholders: the people and groups who are affected by the project, who can influence its design and conduct, and who usually have different and competing agendas.
