ABSTRACT

Family workers using solution-focused ideas recognise the importance of discussing the concerns explicitly with families from the beginning. However, workers who have actively used solution-focused ideas report that they can be effective in assisting at least some family members to take active steps for change in their lives. A dilemma for workers assisting families affected by domestic violence arises around questions of responsibility. Yet family workers will be aware that for families with limited access to money, possibilities are inevitably constrained and the impact of living in poverty will make it harder to implement solutions. Because a solution-focused approach makes a clear distinction between the person and the problem, using solution-focused ideas can help families to look at what could be different without their being overwhelmed by a sense of blame or stigma.
