ABSTRACT

Family work targeting change in families must therefore take into account the community context in which a family lives. Family workers can add value to many of the strategies through which family work services are delivered. Family workers are adept in using strategies to develop self-esteem and communication skills because they are the basic tools for families to use when identifying needs and working for change. When the physical infrastructure is lacking, family workers have a role in identifying a community's needs and helping to lobby to remedy the situation. Home visiting by paid family workers can engage families on their own turf and provide links with a range of other agencies. An awareness of social capital encourages family workers to think about the wider context of their work and in particular the ongoing development of their community.
