ABSTRACT

It is technologies of governance, systems of political representation, of funding, of accountability and practices known as democracy, which are now being taught with the same assumptions as were attached to farming technologies in an earlier time. The economistic designs of the more recent Gulperan era have also left traces on the Aboriginal culture which was to remain visible in specific discrete forms under the whitewash of modernity. A steady stream of white men and women come to take up employment at Bulman in various capacities. Different manners have become problematic with the development of close relations across a cultural barrier because of the systematic organisational and structural authority which underpins the work and thus the culture of whitefellas as they execute government policy. It is popularly believed that commerce and kinship are, in some way, incompatible. It lacks a whole series of distinctions which are crucial to Aboriginal kinship categories.
