ABSTRACT

Starting a story with the punchline is the opposite of the narrative way of telling a tale. And, despite the many changes in news media production over time, it remains a useful technique. For one thing, it allows readers to take in the most important points of a story without reading the rest, and that's all some readers want. In news writing, brevity is a virtue, but not at the expense of the facts. Making sure they've covered all the main elements of a story is one of the first things reporters have to learn. Choosing a news angle means finding the most newsworthy element of the story and putting that at the top. The angle a reporter uses when writing a story will also influence the way they conduct the interviews and the quotes they choose to use. A financial newspaper or news agency would naturally look for an angle of interest to the business community.
