ABSTRACT

Photographs are often described as the 'windows' to a page, and this is definitely the case with newspapers, online sites and magazines. Journalists working on regional or suburban newspapers, small magazines or websites may have to take their own photographs, as well as write news stories. The characteristics that apply to news stories should also be used to judge news photographs. While photographs of prominent people such as the prime minister or a celebrity will always be newsworthy, it's important to include different faces whenever possible. There are two main formats for newspaper and online photographs: the vertical or portrait shot; and the horizontal or landscape shot. Many photographers believe a photograph should be composed in thirds. For instance, in a landscape shot one-third would be the ground, one-third the ocean and the final third the sky. As with journalism, getting a good news photograph can be a case of being in the right place at the right time.
