ABSTRACT

This chapter shows how different work settings within the mental health system require us to work in quite different ways—such as operating within a particular model of case coordination or case management, with a particular therapeutic approach, or with a particular focus on advocacy. The strengths-based approach is perhaps the dominant approach in contemporary social casework in mental health. There is evidence that a strengths-based approach makes a greater contribution to both personal recovery and symptom alleviation, compared with other common approaches Case management, such an essential part of modern mental health systems, has its origins in social casework. The model of case management most prevalent in Australia has been called ‘clinical and rehabilitation-based case management’ Case managers are based in the community, but in most services their role is to work with the client wherever they may be, including during any periods of hospital stay.
