ABSTRACT

The reliability of a scale can vary depending on the sample. It is therefore necessary to check that each of the student’s scales is reliable with their particular sample. This information is usually reported in the Method section of their research paper or thesis. If the students scale contains some items that are negatively worded, these need to be reversed before checking reliability. To demonstrate this technique, the author use the survey.sav data file included on the website. Full details of the study, the questionnaire and the scales used are provided in the Appendix. If the students wish to follow along with the steps, the students should start IBM SPSS Statistics and open the file survey.sav.
