ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors review the various statistical techniques that are available and take the students step by step through the decision-making process. This chapter is broken into two main parts. First, the authors look at the techniques used to explore the relationship among variables and second, they consider the techniques the students can use when the students want to assess differences between groups. It provides an overview of the General Linear Model, under which many of the statistical techniques can be considered. Pearson correlation or Spearman correlation is used when the students want to explore the strength of the relationship between two continuous variables. This gives tan indication of both the direction and the strength of the relationship to the students. A positive correlation indicates that as one variable increases, so does the other. A negative correlation indicates that as one variable increases, the other decreases.
