ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses data screening process that involves two steps: first step, check for errors: check each of variables for scores that are out of range and second step: find and correct the error in the data file: find where in the data file this error occurred and correct or delete the value. When checking for errors, the students are trying to identify values that fall outside the range of possible values for a variable. Errors must be corrected before total scores for these scales are calculated. It is a good idea to keep a log book. There are several ways to check for errors using IBM SPSS Statistics but to illustrate two different ways below, one that is more suitable for categorical variables and the other for continuous variables.
