ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a stronger emphasis on the integration of information and communication technology (ICT) into the teaching and learning of a biological science topic about offspring to highlight the powerful and exciting opportunities that ICT affords modern science classrooms. It indicates the ICT competencies of investigating, creating, communicating, managing and operating, and safe and ethical use. Children in the first years of schooling generally have an interest in young creatures, such as puppies, kittens or human babies. Video production and use of images have the power to capture much of the visual and spatial thinking that is vital for learning science. Video technology is available through most digital cameras and editing software is available as standard on most computer operating systems. The children could then name each stage and add further information, thus creating a group Voice Thread product with shared knowledge. The act of integrating multiple modes of learning also potentially enhances children’s understanding of a topic.
