ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the plight of the mostly indentured labourers from India in Fiji, British Guiana, Australia and North America. The conditions of Indians in Fiji in particular had been at the centre of discussions before the DEHL was formed; the discrimination and prohibitory laws levied on these overseas Indians led to many protests and government crackdowns. The chapter provides a history of the dealings of the DEHL in these countries to represent and address the issues of the Indian populations.
