ABSTRACT

This chapter is about the entry of Indian migrants into South Africa as indentured labourers or as traders. It talks about the clashes between the Indian settlers with the British colonial powers over causes such as equal franchise, abolition of discriminatory taxes, of settlement and opening businesses outside restricted areas, domiciliary rights, and acceptance of Indian marriages. This chapter highlights the work of the agents and the top ranks of the DEHL, like Bajpai and the contribution of ICS officers working for the South African Indians.
