ABSTRACT

Flaherty's work, more interestingly, provided later documentary filmmakers with a blueprint for documentary storytelling: a blueprint that combined both creativity and observation. Grierson, much like Flaherty, also believed that documentary films ought to play a role in informing and educating the masses mixing entertainment and artistry with observational camera work to immerse audiences into worlds that might ordinarily be hidden from view. Key features of Pennebaker's approach include the following: Longinotto's approach is very reminiscent of the direct cinema style of D. A. Pennebaker in that she uses, predominantly, observational camerawork and a low-key filmmaking presence to document her subjects. In response to these questions, students might consider both the production and distribution-based advantages/disadvantages of digital technology use, as well as the degree to which digital innovations have been integrated into documentary films.
