ABSTRACT

This chapter describes and discusses the components of effective literacy instruction, including elements of effective unit and lesson planning. It begins with the attributes of a highly literate graduate and continues by describing some overarching concepts that apply to all instruction, such as the gradual release of responsibility (Pearson). There are sections on reading; writing; speaking, listening, and collaboration; and research and technology, each broken into grade spans for discussion (early years, elementary, middle years, high school). The chapter ends with reflective questions for system leaders, building leaders, and literacy/instructional coaches.
