ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the main ideas about the psychological effects of immigration and resettlement, exploring how immigrants integrate into their new circumstances. Discussion of the mental health issues they often encounter includes an examination of social forces such as discrimination and stigmatization. Trauma is frequently a factor in migration, and various aspects of trauma are considered in light of this. An overview of US immigration is offered along with a discussion of the role of xenophobia. Social dynamics like these are expressed in groups and are reviewed here with attention to acts of inclusion and exclusion.
