ABSTRACT

Music, like art, constitutes a useful pedagogical medium through which to filter the history and culture of a society. This chapter presents an introduction to hip hop culture in the United States during the early 1970s, then transitions to a brief overview of the 1990s, considered the golden age of Italian hip hop, which revolutionized all other forms of art and became the ideal filter for rebellion and rejection of the status quo. The chapter proposes a song entitled Lo Straniero by the hip hop group Sangue Misto, still considered today one of the most influential bands of the mid-1990s. The lyrics focus on social issues such as social marginalization and political power, and bring to light the linguistic reality of underground movements, the alternative use of the Italian language, and the dialectal forms made available to the readers.
