ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the effects of crime, specifically the organized crime of the so-called Camorra, on young children. The excerpt from Saviano’s short story “Super Santos” will present learners with the realistic language of an author who narrates the ruthless world of criminal organizations. Saviano accurately and vividly denounces a phenomenon that permeates not only the Italian streets but extends beyond national borders. In his distinctively unapologetic language, Saviano calls upon readers to witness a glimpse of Neapolitan life, in which innocent children alternate between a soccer game and games much bigger than themselves.
