ABSTRACT

9:00 am – As the bell rings, Miss Alexander moves from greeting students at the door to the front of the room. “Welcome everyone! Today we are learning about my favorite lesson of the year, so I hope you enjoy it! We have two challenge questions today so please take out your notebooks.” Miss Alexander puts the first challenge question on the board and asks students to independently jot down their ideas on a scrap paper or in their notes. Most students begin working right away but Miss Alexander checks in on a few who are missing supplies or reluctant to start. She reminds Ava that scrap paper is available in the back of the room. She lets Evelyn borrow a pencil from a cup on her desk and she encourages Byron to get starting, reminding him that he needs a prediction, but not necessarily a correct answer. After a few more moments, she poses the second question and gives students time to record ideas.
