ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the key concepts and arguments presented in the book, including crisis, democracy, liberalism, capitalism, education and schooling for democracy. Key literature are drawn on to examine how the twenty-first century is emerging as one of complex, interconnected crises, including climate change and ecological collapse, increasing social unrest and political instability, and growing economic inequality. At the heart of the book is the question of why and how education broadly, and schooling more specifically, can be for democracy, and the possibilities for greater equality, compassion and commitment to a sustainable future on the planet.
