ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the contemporary challenges facing Western, capitalist, liberal–democratic societies in the first decades of the twenty-first century. A critique of neoliberal policymaking and its effects on education is provided, with a particular emphasis on implications for schooling and democracy. The chapter also considers some potential openings towards a new democratic horizon, which is more inclusive, sustainable and equitable than the current hegemonic system, finishing with an examination of how schooling for democracy might enable more democratic modes of being and becoming in the world.
