ABSTRACT

The Political Future of the Working Classes was published by the NUCCA in anticipation of a general election in 1868 based on the greatly extended electorate created by the Reform Acts of 1867–1868. The pamphlet declared the Conservative party ‘the real friend of the people’. The Conservative government had settled Reform and improved workhouse and factory working conditions. Matters Whig-radical politicians, over the previous 20 years, had proved unable or unwilling to redress. The institutions of the country required protection from destructive radicalism, a patriotic duty best fulfilled by working men supporting progressive Conservatism.
