ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book focuses on four elements in the teaching/learning process: school climate; the views and expectations of teachers in solidarity with principals and policy makers; teacher interactions with students and parents; and the centrality of reflection to improve practice. It supports and highlights the need for cultural adaptations in the academic success of inner-city students served by predominantly white and more privileged teachers. The book then explores differences in school cultures and how the compatibility of a teacher and student’s primary upbringing determines adaptability and success. It also explores the challenges new teachers face on a personal and professional level. The book focuses on the experience of immigrant teachers, illustrating the overlap of personal and professional demands in the teaching/learning process. It then demonstrates the centrality of parent/teacher collaboration in students’ academic success.
