ABSTRACT

As a filmmaker, we can explore apoptosis from a literal or figurative perspective. The synthetic connection is our storytelling privilege; nothing necessarily links relationships to apoptosis. Internal or external drama prompts many relationships to dissolve; a character might change the way they interpret events and see it in a new light, or the world might force a character to move far away. Most audiences expect a clear “cause-and-effect” relationship in break-up stories; our interpretation might leave them baffled. A synthetic film—a film that connects ideas unlike other examples in the medium—forces audiences to pay closer attention. Audiences return to certain filmmakers because they know that their interpretation will be well thought-out, with supporting aesthetics that make sense.
