Society needs a dynamic quality prompting a sense of change. The dynamic quality disrupts the status quo and sends the culture on a new quest. The hardest thing one can do in the middle years of serious filmmaking is to make a great, emotionally compelling and logically sound film. Screenwriters often talk about the time when the dialogue seemingly comes from the characters without writer intervention. After writing several different points of view for the premise, pick the one that best suits our opportunity to challenge our skills as a filmmaker. Making one film within the confines of “rules” is not proof of mastery in the same way that a standardized test asking ways to avoid jump-cutting, the number of amps a 1,000-watt light draws, or which frequencies a high-pass filter reduces indicates genius.
